About the FE/EIT Exam

The registration process consists of passing two written eight-hour exams. The first exam is the F.E. (fundamentals of engineering, used to be called E.I.T. engineer-in-training). The second eight-hour exam (called the P.E. exam) is taken after the first one (F.E./E.I.T) is passed. The P.E. is based entirely upon the candidate's major field of engineering. It involves fewer and longer problems.

• The FE examination is an 8-hour supplied-reference examination: 120 questions in the 4-hour morning session and 60 questions in the 4-hour afternoon session.

• Examinees work all questions in the morning session and all questions in the afternoon module.

• The FE examination uses both the International System of Units (SI) and the US Customary System (USCS).

• Beginning with the April 2010 examination, the General module was renamed Other Disciplines. The module was renamed to better describe it to the examinees for whom it is intended. No other changes were made to the FE exam specifications for April 2010.

The morning session Other Disciplines (which everyone takes) involves TWELVE general engineering topics. The afternoon session now offers six options. One may choose General Engineering (renamed "Other Disciplines"), Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. The 60 problems in the afternoon, regardless of option chosen, constitute fifty percent of the overall grade.
